Darkness has fallen again this year at Kennywood Phantom Fright Nights 2019.

The park’s annual transformation from Pittsburgh’s best theme park to award-winning spectacle of terror has taken place, giving attendees the chance to experience scary and clever mazes or ride some of the park’s long-standing favorites. With so many options, it can be tough to know where to start. That’s why we’ve put together this guide for AAA members to pick their poison. Whether you’re looking to be creeped out, experiment beyond the classic tropes, or simply be scared witless, Phantom Fright Nights has something lurking in store for you.

The scariest mazes

Winner – Shady Grove Memorial Hospital

This new addition to the lineup of haunts at Phantom Fright Nights is just what the doctor ordered. Shady Grove Memorial Hospital was established near the turn of the 19th century, and is run by an evil doctor looking for test subjects for his chaotic experiments. Make your way through the maze of his victims, passing corpses and living dead along the way. The eye-popping experience ends with a first-hand encounter that you’re sure to never forget … if you survive.

Runner-up – Villa of the Vampire

You may have heard of Count Dracula or Nosferatu—but have you heard of The Master? That’s the only name given to an old and powerful vampire who built a villa to house his children of the night at Kennywood’s Phantom Fright Night. This maze makes ample use of jump scares, including vampires sneaking around corners and ghouls popping through walls. What makes Villa of the Vampire uniquely spooky is the unknown. As legend has it, many have joined The Master over the years to strengthen his pack of vampires. Will you be next?

The most creative mazes

Winner – Voodoo Bayou

Any longtime Pittsburgher can tell you that the Raging Rapids is one of the highlights of going to Kennywood Park on a hot summer day. But with the blanket of darkness known as Phantom Fright Nights now descended over the Park, hometown traditions have taken on a sinister tone. The rapids have been drained, leaving behind the haunted Voodoo Bayou swampland. As you make your way through, you’ll encounter swamp creatures, voodoo priestesses, and warnings from those who traveled before you—but didn’t live to tell the tale.

Runner-up – Dark Shadows

Are you afraid of the dark? While other mazes and attractions at Phantom Fright Nights leave you scared by what you see, it’s what you don’t see that makes this maze so horrifying. As you make your way through pitch-black settings, you find yourself encountering the shadows of the night. They play games with your mind, and lurk around every twist and turn. This haunting maze may be in Kiddieland, but it’s certainly not for young children or the faint of heart.
